Here's some progress on the Karwood Bear avatar I started working on last fall. I had a several-month slump where my facerig progress was interrupted by other life stuff but I'm back to work on faceriggery in earnest. I haven't done any 3d rigging since I was in college and I'm having to relearn a lot of stuff (and bring what I'd learned before up-to-date), but I am feeling very optimistic about how things are shaping up so far!

Thanks for the feedback! When I was in school, painting smooth skin weights legit gave me anxiety nightmares, and I didn't even use bones for the facial animation (aside from the head/jaw), I did all my facial animation with blendshapes. So having to paint the weights for all of the facial muscles in order to get the face poses correct is a new and very interesting flavor of terror. Fortunately recently I found an excellent tutorial video detailing the process of painting skin weights in Maya for a bone-based facial rig and it's lifted the fog for me.

Thanks a bunch for sharing that facial rigging tut! I am in the same boat that you were a while back... Bone based facial Riggs... Bleh!
Any who, hopefully this will help me to not fear skinning and painting weights so much :p

I definitely want a bear, hopefully one a bit more cartoony, like my avatar.

Okay, yeah, EXACTLY like my avatar.

So I kind of stalled out a few months ago but the client that commissioned this has been gently nudging me to get back to work on it, and his patience is astonishing. I'm going to be working on this avatar (and two others) on a weekly basis.

I had to double back on my progress a little - it turns out that when you want to rig a face, you should always start with a resting, neutral pose, not the huge ridiculous gaping maw that I had going up here. So I ripped all the bones out and used a temporary head/jaw bone to pose the mouth closed and freeze the geometry that way, and I'm putting the bones back in again, following the eat3d tutorial closely as I do so.

I've also got these two other avatars that I'm working on - I just retopo'd and unwrapped the hyena (again, except this time manually, because I didn't like the topology that zremesher spit out), and I'm in the process of retopologizing a third shirt for the cat. I'll probably start putting bones in them next week:

also: I would really love to like, watch a video capture of how Mirai or whichever artist at holotech goes about rigging and painting their skin weights, because the topology on Fluffo gives me anxiety hives. How on earth did they make that work??

    @Dawnchapel

While we can't provide a video of this since the entire avatar creation process can take up to 2-3 months for one avatar (with one artist working on it beginning to end).

However, our we strive to make our process transparent and hopefully at one point, accessible to all artists. Ask us any question exact and we will answer. Mail our team of artists at artsupport[at]holotech[dot]eu and our technical artists will assist you

    Hey Jujubi!

I wasn't being serious - I know that avatar creation is a long, painstaking process involving a lot of different steps and iterating over those steps, and of course I don't expect anyone to come hold my hand and walk me through Game Character Creation 101. The truth is I enjoy figuring things out for myself and working on my own, it's much more satisfying when I can solve problems through my own effort. I haven't reached a point in my work on the avatars yet where I feel like I need to have any specific technical questions answered by the art staff, pretty much everything I'm doing right now is - to my knowledge - more or less universal to next-gen character art.

I was mostly commenting on how unconventional the facial topology for the Fluffo character is. I was taught that facial topology for character animation should have clean, well-defined edge loops, and the use of triangles and n-poles for termination of detail should happen in places that don't deform heavily, like the forehead or sides of the face. The Fluffo model's geometry is very very dense around the mouth and there's triangles and n-poles all over the parts of the model that have the most deformation, and I am kind of curious about the methodology behind it (though not so curious that I feel like I need to bother working professionals about it), especially since the model animates so beautifully well.

Mirai? I meant Mihai. Mirai is an old 3d modeling application that John Feather liked to use.

    Anyway, progress this week:

-Started painting in skin weights for the bear avatar, noticed when I got to the jaw that I forgot to put the tongue bones into the skeleton hierarchy before doing the smooth bind, so now I need to see if I need to start over or if I can add bones after the bind has been done.

Posed the mouth closed and made new teeth for the striped hyena avatar, and put in all the relevant joints:

And finished the retopo on the dress shirt for the cat avatar. Need to make a tongue for the cat, and buttons for the dress shirt, then I can start putting bones in:

Did a lot of facial skinning and weighting this week. Got some working necks and jaws and the beginning of lips and cheeks.

Thanks folks! Sorry for the lack of updates, made some progress on putting in animation controls and getting more of the facial joints weighted this week.
