All avatars have torso and hands. We are working on tracking the hands movement too. Tracking the fingers is a different matter, it will probably require more advanced sensor.
@michalpatryk It's true they look weird as they are somewhere between cartoonish and realistic. We should decide on a for a more clear style and we'll rework them.

I would suggest to track them using the kinect sensor. They are really good to track hand gestures. Hand tracking would make for some really nice things, eg. deaf people.

The current tests are being done with Kinect, however there are some problems with this. In order to have torso and hands tracking you have to stay at a certain distance from the senzor, and at that distance the resolution required for face expressions is too low. There are solutions to overcome this issue and is one of the things we are working on.

If i remember correctly from playing with the Kinect on a comp is that it will still work even at an angle, so people could put it farther back compared to the web cam, to get around that problem.

In order to work correctly it your upperbody shouldn't be occluded by the table or anything else (Kinect doesn't generate the skeleton otherwise). Kinect 1 has vertical FOV of 43 degrees, which is not very much and thus you get to stay at 100-110 cm from the senzor. Because the resolution is VGA certain facial features become indistinct and this leads to quality drop of the expression tracking. We are exploring two solutions in order to overcome this issues, as it's quite important to us to deliver both facial and upper torso tracking. But we certainly don't want to jeopardize the facial expression tracking.

What i was thinking was use a webcam that's on top of the monitor for expression tracking and the kinect on a shelf (if you have one) above and behind the monitor for the upper body (not using the vga cam just the inferred depth cam)

That's one of the solutions we are trying right now. :)

    Its just idea:
If you would create an app for phone, that will read camera data, and send it to pc, you could create good hand and face tracking without people needing to buy addtional stuff. Phone, as the weaker cpu, would track hand, and if possible-edit it to raw move tracking data. Then, send it via wi-fi to pc, where data would get post-procesed and added to the existing face tracking build-in computer webcamera. You could use back camera. It probably wont have the power of pc, but it would be a cheap arternative.

@michalpatryk that would not work for the fact that webcams and cellphones cant give you depth information.

Currently the body tracking is based on Kinect SDK, so we can't use a different camera for this, at least for the moment. Koda is right, a big part of the Kinect performances are based on the depth sensitivity which is absent from the usual mobile cameras. But apart from that, their SDK is made for Kinect sensor not for any other camera. But this is not a closed matter, we have some things to explore regarding this feature.

Mihai, you actually gave me an idea to explore, namely a powerglove. They can track XYZ movement as well as yaw, roll and pitch, and when combined with flex sensors on the fingers you can either squeeze or relax each finger. I dont have too much time, but I have the capability to make one myself.
