Me, Myself And I...

    I'm hoping to do a Youtube channel with a friend so I'm making caricatures of ourselves for the webcam feed... Here is my work on the version of me so far. Having some issues with the import process but hopefully I can get that sorted eventually.

    Here I am working in FaceRig of sorts. I only have the head texture done 'properly' in that they import. I'm starting to think my polycount is too low for a quality shader effect (the shadow seems a bit jaggy in places for example) ...but I'm just happy to get something IN FaceRig...as I'm still have issues with the importer crashing a lot.

    He needs a LOT of work texture wise etc...but yeah, I'm just trying to make sure I understand the import process before investing in a final character/rig setup.

    Things for me to test more :
    - Initial position setup...he wasn't EXACTLY in the middle of the scene when I first loaded him up, but he was facing the right way and at the right scale...it was very easy to put him in the correct position...but I'd like to make this a default thing rather than a tweaked thing.
    - Add all the textures and reimport so it looks a little more finished as a test run.
    - Maybe double the polys on the face with a turbosmooth and see what effect that has on the shadowing.
    - Test whether I need to delete the previous file of an imported character to make the reimport work (although Ican't really know this until the importer is stable).

    Seems you don't need to delete the previous folder to update the import :)

    Also, take note of the specular file in that has different elements on each channel. Didn't know that made my stuff all kinds of weird :)

    Mouth rigging with just bones is HARD! :) I'm actually trying to cut out a few of the bones that the Demon uses...I find it easier to use just four bones. Top, bottom, and the corners. Although eventually I may have to use the full set. Although it seems to be working so far, at least with the idle animation. I have yet to see /understand why the demon has so many bones I guess, and wondering if they are, in fact, as important as the docs say.

    I find that applying all the vertices to the head, then grab all of the vertices for the jaw (including the lower lips etc) and applying that to the jawbones (with a blend in the middle). and THEN applying the detail for the actual lip bones to be the way to go. Still pretty finicky though and difficult to get good overlaps in order to have smooth transitions in the more extreme poses.

    If anyone knows any good tutorials for rigging facial animation with only bones those would come in handy for lots of people I think!

    That said I am rigging my character as best I can and still tinkering with the textures. Having some issues with the normal maps being a little...tame. So wondering if I can bump those up, I can always use photoshop or other methods but it looks fine in MAX, so...yeah.

    Still having stability issues with the importer. Very random. Hopefully that gets worked out eventually.

    Things to do :
    - Make interior mouth and teeth...Still haven't done that actually!
    - Complete Rigging
    - Start animations (Make visual documentation if possible for better understanding of needed animations for others)
    - Maybe redo jacket (the seams are killing me!)
    - Test Prop bones with some custom props (I have some 3D headphones somewhere I could bake)
    - Celebrate!!!

    And the finished result...of sorts.

    I still have some quirks to figure out, a couple of things don't work as I'd like, and calibration is super important if I want to get it accurate at all...but not bad for a first try if I do say so myself :)

    No, as it is my own face it would be a bit odd to have other people use it :) That and I want to use it for a youtube channel so it has to be me and JUST me, however I am thinking of releasing the maxfile/.obj file for other to use as a base perhaps.
