Hey, I just saw this posted about on Polycount, it's a lightweight rigging and animation tool called Akeytsu, and it looks like it's much more straightforward and easy to understand than Maya's rigging tools. Right now it's free to use while it's in beta. There's a lot of things it doesn't do yet, like painting skin weights (they have to be manually adjusted with a component-style editor where you select the vertices), but the learning curve looks pretty friendly and I expect the feature set will become more broad as it grows.

At present it only imports and exports as .fbx, though, whereas Facerig's import tool requires that all of the model and animation files be exported as collada, so if you try to make animations with Akeytsu you'll still need another application to convert all your animations over.
