The ability to create a character using pre-rendered models. Like an average character creator online. Have lots of different heads, eyes, hair, ect. to be able to create your own character and have it instantly added into your character list. This will allow people to create things, as well as share it with everyone easier.

It's an idea I think would be a something I can only hope they add later down the road.

This is a great idea, and would be amazing if it were to actually be implamented. I do agree, it will probably be one of the last things they'd add, but I think they should add it reguardless.

Something like that would be great. I'm not really at all knowledgeable or skilled at making character models and it'd be nice to be able to make some fairly simple changes like different hair styles/colors easily without having to make/buy new characters for each.

This feature will definitely be unique. Not only, but it will also be very important as people tend to get "bored" of the same all over, but when people have the ability to create models and always make something new, now that is something that will awake a lot of interest.

The best thing ever is modders community. If FaceRig team will give them the product with ability to mod it, you will probably never get bored.

and if they end up doing that, we will hop right on board with all the free modding addons that the community has to offer! We will be the leading source of free Models as FaceRig.com will be focusing on paid addons, we will only be focusing on Free.

You could very well use blender (might take a bit of 3D experience) and add things to already rendered models and then you can select the different styles that you want. It's not 100% user friendly, but it would do just fine for those who learn quickly or already know how to use things such as Photoshop or Gimp. Blender in my opinion is the best option currently. I doubt there will be any online program for 3D for a long time. This is all just my opinion and I may be wrong in some respects.

To the idea of modding, I don't see it being too huge as there isn't a need to mod the already existing program unless it is missing an important slider. The only thing needed really is more 3D models that fit the program and I am sure there won't be a shortage of those. ^.^

I think a Steam Workshop style of approach would be better than them just spending so long to give it all in a platter I feel the 3D modeller community and animators will certainly go out of their way to have their creations exposed.

I would also love for FaceRig to give out the kits as well or a very detailed explanation on how to correctly rig the models for the tracking to work. But I am more than certain people will be making blanks of like "generic canine" or "generic disney character"

Avatars can be made with interchangeable parts in many ways , most with many restrictions and difficulties.

The easiest way to customize the geometry is to add objects that are not engaged in avatars expressions and do not alter the avatar itself . The problem with such independent objects is that you can only fit those avatars who have similar proportions . For instance a viking helmet fits differently the head of a panda and the head of a dragon , because they have very different head shape.

If the interchangeable parts are those participating in expression, such as eyes, mouth , eyebrows , etc. this will further complicate things . Besides the fact that those parts should continue to match each other and aside from the fact that it is possible that the shading could appear discontinuous, such a system means that each avatar would actually not be a single model but a collection of models that receive animation commands. Such a system is possible but it is more complex and it's not how the avatars are built right now.

I think character customization will first consist in:
    - the ability to change character's skins (and this will not be restricted to just the diffuse color, but it will involve the whole shading - for instance making a golden dragon from a lizard one, which should require a different shading algorithm, different texture maps for diffuse, specularity, reflectivity, ambient occusion etc.)
    - add various props to the avatar (which will probably be specific to that avatar inner proportions - will probably work on a panda and a fox, but not a horse or a lizard)
    - re-size various elements of the figure, like enlarging or reducing the size of the eyes etc

Interchangeable face parts is something quite difficult to introduce and would increase production time considerably and I think that would also decrease the quality of the respective avatars . But if this kind of customization will be very demanded we will probably make a system to support it.

Hair styles seems to be an easy thing to add as a prop. I'm setting up what I'm currently building like that. But as Mihai just said - per character model for the most part. Should allow for better customization of the characters, at least.

However! I've seen several character creation tools that have sliders/swappable parts for making completely custom characters quickly. Fuse or makehuman comes to mind. And then you simply have to export the model. Once you have that, changing it in a fashion that would be capable of being imported into facerig would be trivial - just add appropriately named skeleton and materials. Could be done by a third party, and if someone wanted a jump start, I believe makehuman is open source.

If you meant creating your own props using pre-rendered objects, maybe. But I do see it a bit of a problem in terms of creating high quality props in that manner. For now and most likely still so in the future, it will be best to create models manually via sculpting and modeling programs.
